The Secret Ingredient Is a Carer Who Can Actually Cook

Marcs Online Avatar Picture.png
For many people living with a spinal cord injury, every meal depends on someone else. A carer who can cook well doesn't just make dinner—they help protect long-term health and improve quality of life.

One of the less obvious challenges of living with a spinal cord injury is that you can't simply wander into the kitchen whenever inspiration strikes. Every meal often relies on the person supporting you that day. As Lionel's rather depressing menu suggests—burnt chicken, burnt lamb, burnt rice and... McDonald's—the question, "What do you fancy for dinner tomorrow?" can sometimes feel more like a gamble than a choice.

Good nutrition plays a huge role in maintaining health after SCI. A balanced diet can help support bowel management, maintain a healthy weight, reduce pressure injury risk, improve energy levels and even lower the chance of secondary health complications. That's why cooking is far more than a domestic chore—it's an important caring skill.

The funny thing is that many carers can confidently operate a hoist, manage medication or complete personal care, yet still produce a jacket potato that could stop a bullet. Clinical competence and culinary competence don't always arrive together!

Whether you're employing carers yourself through direct payments or receiving support through a care agency, finding someone with both practical care skills and the confidence to prepare nutritious, enjoyable meals can be surprisingly difficult. It's one of those qualities that often isn't listed on a CV but quickly becomes invaluable.

At Fellow Carer, our spinal injury training helps carers understand the wider picture of supporting someone with SCI—including why good nutrition forms such an important part of everyday wellbeing and independence. We even have cooking videos.

Next week on Life of Lionel: Lionel knows that venturing beyond his house can be hazordous. Tune in to find out why.

Before you go, what meal has the best carers you've worked with cooked for you—and have you ever suffered through a truly unforgettable culinary disaster? We'd love to hear your stories in the comments.
