Cartoon#039: Stool Type 4
The Type 4 stool is the gold standard of bowel movements—smooth, well-formed and a welcome sight for carers and clinicians alike. But what makes this aerodynamic masterpiece the benchmark for healthy digestion, and why should everyone know what it looks like?
If stool types were entering a beauty contest, Type 4 would probably walk away wearing the crown.
Smooth, soft and beautifully formed, it's the stool your bowel has been quietly aiming for all along. It usually suggests you're well hydrated, getting enough fibre and that your digestive system is moving things along at just the right pace.
That said, even this aerodynamic masterpiece can become a guided missile if bowel care isn't planned properly! Timing, positioning and technique still matter—especially for people living with a spinal cord injury.
At Fellow Carer, we teach carers and healthcare professionals not just what a healthy stool looks like, but what it means and how to respond safely and confidently. Because understanding bowel care can make a huge difference to comfort, dignity and health.
So be honest... when was the last time you celebrated seeing a perfect Type 4—or are you still waiting for your digestive system to earn its pilot's licence?
