One of the least talked-about aspects of spinal cord injury care is just how international it has become. Across the UK, thousands of dedicated carers have travelled from every corner of the world to support people living with SCI. Whether they're from Poland, Romania, Nigeria, India, the Philippines, Ghana or dozens of other nations, they all share one thing in common—a desire to care for others.

This cartoon gently pokes fun at the wonderfully unfamiliar names that sometimes leave care coordinators wondering how to pronounce them correctly. Most of us have been there. It's far better to ask, "Can I call you Bob?" with a smile than to spend six months avoiding someone's name altogether!

The truth is, diversity enriches care. Every carer brings different experiences, perspectives and problem-solving skills to the role. While accents, languages and customs may differ, compassion, professionalism and teamwork are universal. Clients often develop lifelong friendships with carers from cultures they might never otherwise have encountered.

Of course, regardless of where a carer comes from, everyone benefits from consistent, specialist training. Spinal cord injury care demands knowledge that goes far beyond general care skills, ensuring every client receives safe, confident and informed support.
