MODULE 5
MOVING AND HANDLING

5.1 Safety First: Your Hands
Kicking off Module 5 is Tanvi, your presenter who trains your carers in the art of moving and handling. It begins with Safety and this part looks at how a carer should maintain their hands.

5.3 Equipment: Sling / Hoist
Here, the presenter introduces the equipment used for hoisting clients who can't move themselves...

5.5 Hoisting Client: Sling Placement
This presentation begins the process of placing a sling underneath a client. By the end, the carer will have a working knowledge of how its done.

5.7 Hoisting Client: Raising them Up
Tanvi, the presenter, teaches carers, in this section, how to transfer the client from the bed to the shower chair using a ceiling hoist.

5.9 Hoisting Client: Check Posture
When hoisting a client, there are many things to look out for. Here, the presenter tackles the key things to look out for having lowered a client into their chair.

5.9.2 Hoisting Client: Check Feet
A carer will quickly learn the importance of being a client's eyes when following these sections as the client can't feel what's happening with their bodies.

5.9.4 Bathroom: Sidenote
As mentioned earlier in the course with Abena, before a client is discharged, changes are made to the home they're moving to. Here we introduce the trainee to a client's bathroom and point out some of the features they can expect to see when they arrive at the client's home.

5.9.6 hoisting Client: Chair to Bed
Finally, Tanvi instructs the trainee in using the hoist with the sling and how to do it safely and securely.

5.2 Safety First: Your Back
We've all been told not to bend our backs at times. That's why our presenter drives this message home, instilling it in the minds of your care workers.

5.4 Equipment: Transfer Board
... and this part introduces the equipment that paraplegics use to get into their chair.

5.6 Hoisting Client: Sling to Hoist
This part of the presentation demonstrates the way to attach a sling to a hoist and points out key safety considerations for the carer and client.

5.8 Hoisting Client: Lowering Client
The process of transferring a client from bed to chair is carefully demonstrated using illustrations created by our in-house artists. We discovered that it was the best way to show a trainee exactly what they need to see to learn what they need to know.

5.9.1 Hoisting Client: Check for Snags!
No detail is too small to include in the training. Every potential hazard when moving and handling a client has been considered and illustrated in these sections.

5.9.3 Hoisting Client: Check Leg Bag!
Finally, a carer is encouraged to check for those things that most people wouldn't think of but which could cause major problems..

5.9.5 Hoisting Client: Back to Bed
After the bathroom routine, the trainee is coached in how to return the client back to bed. The presenter shares the exact positioning of the chair to achieve optimal positioning of the client as they're hoisted upwards.
